All Things New -
Look What God is Doing

From the very beginning, the earth and its people have experienced God as Creator. In Genesis the creation stories (chapters 1 and 2) present God as bringing order out of chaos, and of forming beauty with both color and contrasts of light and dark. God created humans in God’s image and likeness as part of that creative order. Ever since that first creative effort, God has continued to create. With each new day, dark subsides and light shines forth, seeds sprout and produce new beauty, and humans find new potential within themselves as they face the future. The Bible provides many stories that reveal God’s ongoing creative presence in the world. And the wonderful truth for us today is that just as God was willing to restore and make things new in the lives of those ancient people, God is still willing to renew us as well. If we look at each moment as an invitation from God to see with new eyes
God’s creation and redemption at work, we can experience hope and renewed energy to be a part of God’s creation.
As this year’s campers come together, they will have a week of new experiences to enjoy. They will have a clean slate upon which to begin—concerns, disappointments, and challenges will not go away, but new friends and fresh opportunities can offer new perspectives on their lives before camp. As they join other campers and their leaders in praising God, they will discover or be reminded that God is with them in each moment. They will also learn that new friends in Christ can offer a different perspective, and that God will continue to do a new thing in us, both individually and collectively. As the week continues and new adventures abound, campers will discover that God is always about doing a new thing. This does not mean that God does not offer stability and safety, but rather that God is always working for good in each new moment. God chooses to bring renewal and to extend additional chances if we open ourselves to God’s shaping. The Spirit of God abides in and among us, ready to guide and correct us when we ask. When we open ourselves to God’s new way, we find that our understanding of who we are changes. We become more fully aware that we are children of God, and, as such, we have a special place in God’s heart. As we claim this new identity, not only are we different on the inside, we find that the way we live evolves into a new faith commitment and a different way of relating to other people, friends and strangers alike. Love becomes the foundation of who we are God’s love for us helps us to show love to others. The camp experience will serve as a small-scale version of living God’s creative way, and can inspire each camper to continue to grow in faith upon returning home.
